The Layers mechanic thing looks so obvious when you see it in action, and it’s hard to believe that no developer has thought about this before. Perhaps they have for all we know, but Live 5 is the first studio to manifest the innovation into tangible reality. For whatever reason, they don’t seem to have trademarked the feature though, and it’s simply called “Layers” in-game.

You win by landing 3 to 5 matching symbols vertically or horizontally on the 5x5 grid, and winning symbols are removed so the layer underneath can emerge. This process mimics the well-known Avalanche mechanic to some degree, but it’s still different. Not least since the third layer is packed with only bonus round triggering scatters, and the bonus round itself comes with an infinite number of layers beneath the 3rd scatter layer.

The Layer system consists of 3 layers of symbols on top of each other, and the first 2 layers come with scarab wilds. You will typically find more wilds in the second layer, and the wilds will step in for all regular pay symbols to help you form winning combos. The scarab wild is also the top paying symbol by far, landing you 25x for 5 of a kind.

There is an Orb modifier that sometimes comes into play after a spin sequence has finished. A red laser beam will then remove lines of symbols from the current layer of the grid, either horizontally, vertically or both. This, of course, reveals new symbols from the layer underneath, and it can also be helpful in triggering the free spins feature.

Speaking of, the third layer consists exclusively of Ankh scatter symbols, and these are key to triggering the bonus round. You need to reveal at least 4 Ankh scatters from the third layer to trigger the free spins, and you will start out with 10 spins. Each extra scatter above the minimum of 4 gives you 1 extra free spin on top of the minimum of 10.

The bonus round comes with “infinite layers”, but the layer setup of the top 3 layers are still the same as in the base game. Dig down to the third scatters-only layer, and each scatter you reveal awards a random number of extra spins between 1 and 3.

However, a new layer of regular symbols and wilds will be revealed below the third layer, ad infinitum.

You will also benefit from a progressive win multiplier during the free spins feature, and it starts a 1x. The multiplier will increase with +1 for each win, and there is no upper limit as to how high it can go. The Orb modifier can become active in the free spins round too, and the max win is capped at £250,000 for a single spin cycle.

We grinded along in the base game, revealing the second layer plenty of times. Suddenly a whopping 6 scatter symbols emerged from the deepest layer, and we got 12 free spins in our lap. This occurs at 0:53 into the 6-minute highlights video you can check out below. The video is longer than usual, as playing out the bonus round took quite a while.

Review Summary

Scientific Games partner, Live 5, has come up with a pretty neat innovation in Orb of Osiris. However, we are a bit surprised that the Layers mechanic has neither been given a more fancy name, nor been trademarked. Granted, it does work somewhat similar to the regular Cascading/Avalanche feature in practice, but it still adds a new “layer” of excitement to the gameplay experience.

The pace of the game is a bit slow in our view, even with the turbo switched on.

Revealing the layers is a meticulous affair, but at least you get to savor the moments when you win. The bonus round can also take quite a while to play out because of this, but all is forgiven if you win anything close to the 7,000x potential. Overall, Live 5 has created a strong game with Orb of Osiris, and we hope to see more of the Layers mechanic in the future.
