Grand Junction: Moscow Magic Review

We’re pretty sure the ancient Inca civilization never saw any trains running through the jungle in their time, but this was the premise for Playtech’s first Grand Junction™ installment called Grand Junction: Enchanted Inca. The train tracks have hardly had time to cool off, before this follow-up takes us to the capital of Russia, and Grand Junction: Moscow Magic is very similar to the first game.

It’s not a straight up reskin job however, as the symbol values and bonus round has been altered. The latter comes with stacked top-tier symbols and wilds, at least if you’re lucky, and the hold-and-spin Grand Junction™ feature will most likely become the constant as this series develops. It’s all about collecting Train symbols to get a shot at the larger prizes and jackpots at the end of the round, and a full Grand Jackpot pays 2,000x your stake.

Grand Junction: Moscow Magic Features

The premium symbols pay between 1.5 and 4 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and the Towers Wild steps in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning combos. The Wild pays the same as the top-tier conductor-looking Cossack Man if you land pure wild symbol wins, and as we’ll discuss further below, the royal symbols may land with a Grand Junction background.

The regular free spins Bonus Round triggers when you land 3+ Egg scatters anywhere in view, and this awards 11 free spins plus an upfront scatter win of 0.1x, 1x or 5x your stake for 3, 4 or 5 scatters, respectively. The top-tier Cossack Man symbol and Tower Wilds may land in stacks during the feature, and you retrigger the bonus round with +11 spins when 3+ Egg scatters land on the same free spin.

The Grand Junction feature can be triggered from within the bonus round.

You need 5 royal symbols with a Grand Junction background anywhere in view to trigger the Grand Junction feature, and these are called Grand Junction scatters in the paytable. The hold-and-spin style feature comes with 9 spins, and only blanks, coin prize symbols (value 1x, 2x, 3x or 5x), Train symbols or Conductor symbols can land during the feature.

The Conductor symbol does not become sticky like the other symbols, but it awards +3 extra spins added to your tally. When the feature ends, all coin prizes are summed up, and you need at least 3 Train symbols to enter stage 2 of the Grand Junction feature.

Grand Junction: Moscow Magic Slot - Stage 2

Stage 2 is a Bonus Game where you can win jackpot prizes (either fully or partially paid), and you get only 1 spin here. You stand to win the part of, or the full; Mini, Minor, Major or Grand Jackpot when you enter the feature with 3, 4, 5 or 6 collected Train symbols, respectively. The jackpot prizes are worth 20x, 100x, 500x or 2,000x your stake, respectively, if they are paid in full.

The 5x1 reel spins, and each position gives you a number between 3 and 7, or a Train symbol.

The Train symbols will reveal a number between 8 and 10, and all numbers are then summed up to determine what prize you win. The Grand Jackpot and/or prize can be 130x, 300x, 600x or 2,000x your stake, depending on your score, and the other jackpots are paid in a similar fractionalized fashion.

The 200 Spins Grand Junction: Moscow Magic Experience

You get to see a lot of small to mid-sized wins in the base game, before we finally trigger the Grand Junction feature around the 2-minute mark. The hold-and-spin style bonus plays out for the remainder of the 4:28-minute highlights video, and we managed to get to the jackpot game. You can check it all out for yourself by hitting the play button below.

Review Summary

This follow-up release is pretty similar to Playtech’s first installment in what looks to become a series, namely the somewhat incongruently themed Grand Junction: Enchanted Inca. Trains and the capital of Russia fits better together than Incas and trains, and Grand Junction: Moscow Magic comes with a different bonus round. The royals to wild symbol transformation is long gone, and you get stacks of the top-tier pay symbol and/or wild stacks instead.

You can win up to 200x your stake from a single spin, which gives the bonus round a 2,200x potential without retriggers. The big attraction is still the Grand Junction feature, and it plays out in the same way as in the first game. You need to collect 6 Trains to stand a chance at winning a truly significant jackpot, although the top-tier Major Jackpot pays a decent consolation prize of 500x your stake.

The game comes across as dated in all ways, which may be intentional, and it feels like entering a different century compared to what many developers are doing these days.

Pros

  • FS w/ stacked wilds and top-tier symbol
  • Grand Junction™ feature w/ 4 jackpots
  • Jackpot game w/ number collect prize system
  • The full Grand Jackpot pays 2,000x

Cons

  • Very similar to Grand Junction: Enchanted Inca
  • Dated appearance and unengaging features

If you enjoy Grand Junction: Moscow Magic you should also try:

Grand Junction: Enchanted Inca - is a strange mix of ancient Inca indians and trains which we don’t quite get, but you’ll benefit from a bonus round where royal symbols may transform into wilds on the 3 middle reels. Other than that, you get the same Grand Junction feature, with jackpots up to 2,000x your stake, and an overall 2,500x potential.

Golden Tsar - is a Red Tiger release with a Russian-inspired theme, and this ‘Book of’ mechanic installment revolves around the Tsar and his family. Fill meters to get expanding symbols in the base game, and the bonus round comes with a randomly chosen expanding scatter pay symbol in addition to the expanding meter system. The max win is 1,936x your stake.

Ivan and the Immortal King - is a Quickspin release based on the Russian folklore hero, Ivan Tsarevich, and you’ll join the brave Ivan in his hunt for the evil Koschei’s well-hidden soul. You can look forward to a Baba Yaga surprise feature, as well as 3 different bonus round tiers with a progressive multiplier. This can lead to payouts up to 10,000x your stake.
