Count Dracula is usually not a very amusing subject matter, although there are certainly comedies about the gothic creature as well. Play’n Go has decided to find inspiration in the latter when they made Count Jokula, and they have created a charming character that’s 50 % bloodthirsty count and 50 % hilarious jester. This is a good old-fashioned horror comedy in other words.

You get parodic “evil laughter” and other action commentary from the Jokula creature, and he serves as the all-important joker wild symbol in this game. It all plays out on a classic 3x3 setup, but the 8,350x potential is higher than usual in Play’n Go’s joker series. The headliner feature is called Respins of Evil, and it’s a sticky wilds (on the middle reel) streak respins feature with a multiplier trail that tops out at x15.

The 3 premium symbols pay between 1.4 and 4 x your stake for 3 of a kind wins, and the dracula Joker Wild pays 50x your stake for the same. In addition, the Joker Wild can step in for pay symbols to help complete wins, like wilds usually do. If the Bat symbol lands on a non-winning spin, it will Shapeshift into the Joker Wild if that means a win is created.

Whenever you land a winning combo involving the Joker Wild on the middle reel, you trigger the Respins of Evil feature.

The winning joker wild, or wilds, become sticky for the respin, and you get a new respin as long as you keep winning. Each respin win moves you along the multiplier trail seen above the grid, and it goes from x2 to x3, x4, x5, x7, x10 and finally x15.

The multiplier boosts the current win per respin, and it stays at the maximum value of x15 if you reach that level. The multiplier resets after the respins feature is over though, and any new joker wilds you land on the middle reel become sticky as well. The respins feature cannot exceed 25 spins, so getting there also ends the feature.

When we first read the title of this game we were certain it was something specifically aimed at the Finnish market.

Count Jokula is, however, a somewhat clever mix of the word Dracula and Joker, which adequately reflects the main character of this game. The Dracula Joker adds a sense of humor to the gameplay, and Play’n Go clearly had a good time making this Joker series installment.

Whether or not there is enough here for players to also have a good time remains to be seen, but the multiplier trail streak respins concept kept our attention for a while at least. It helps that it can lead to a solid 8,350x payout on a very good day, although your chances are only 1 in 100 million. We’re probably not dealing with a timeless classic here, but Count Jokula is a curiosity that’s well worth a closer look until the novelty wears off.
