The mining theme is a literal “goldmine” for slot developers, as any punter can recognize themselves in the prospector grinding along hoping to strike it big. The gold-toothed old chap in Big Boom Riches is certainly a mouthy and charming fellah, providing plenty of good ole’ boy action commentary with a thick Southern accent and enough resolve to keep you going for a while.

The cartoonish visuals are nicely done, with the trail to the mining shaft mostly hidden behind the wooden 5x3 grid. The predictable redneck banjo soundtrack is enjoyable too, and this is an above average JFTW release.

There are 3 types of wilds in this game, and all 3 step in for regular pay symbols to help you form winning combinations. All wilds pay the same as the top-tier regular symbol, awarding 15x your stake for 5 on a payline. The Rolling Reels feature triggers on every win, exploding winning symbols to make room for new/existing tiles to drop from above. This repeats as long as you keep winning.

TNT wilds land during base game play, and these explode to remove all regular adjacent symbols.

The TNT wilds are collected in the TNT barrel meter above the reels, turning the barrels golden. Collecting 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 TNT wilds in a single Rolling Reels sequence, awards a cash prize of 1x, 3x, 7.5x, 15x, 30x, 75x, 150x, 300x, 1,000x or 5,000x your stake, respectively.

You need to land 3, 4 or 5 prospector scatters anywhere in sight to trigger the Bonus Round, and this awards 9 free spins with an up-front scatter payout of 2x, 20x or 100x your stake, respectively. Scatters land to award +1 extra spin during the feature, and special X-Wilds land to increase the non-resetting win multiplier by +1. These also explode to remove all regular adjacent symbols, just like TNT Wilds in the base game.

You also get regular wilds both in the base game, and during the bonus round, and non-UK players can purchase the free spins round for 50x the stake. This awards 3 prospector scatters on the spin that follows, but the bonus buy option might not be available in all jurisdictions.

Review Summary

JFTW has clearly been inspired by their very own Scatter Jackpot Gold series, but even though most of the elements being juggled here are well-known, Big Boom Riches is still a pretty solid release. The toothless, chatty prospector has enough of a vocabulary (and accent) to be charming for a good while, and we also like the somewhat simple cartoonish visual presentation.

Exploding symbols are always satisfying to watch, and collecting TNT wild prizes in cascading sequences keeps the base game interesting to the tune of 5,000x your stake. The bonus round, with the exploding X-Wild progressive win multiplier, certainly took us for a climactic ride down the mine shaft, and we’ll probably be back for more at some point.
