Players familiar with ELK Studios’ Gold series will hardly be disappointed by Katmandu Gold. ELK has really outdone themselves this time, and lifted the whole series to a new plateau. The reels are set in the stunning mountains of Nepal, and you can place bets between 20p and £100. Visually, Kathmandu Gold is the best game so far, and the same can be said about the math model and the features.

Both the Ice Climber feature and the Expanding Wins are brand new innovations, and both are pretty effective in keeping you on track to maximize the grid with up to 8 rows and 262,144 win ways (a 9th row is also possible, but we’ll get to that below). The Cascading Wins feature (also called the Avalanche feature) is at the center of everything here, and it means winning symbols are removed to make way for new symbol drops. You will benefit from 1 extra row per cascading win up to 8 rows, which also increases the number of win ways up to 262,144.

You can also land mega symbols on any given symbol drop here, and these come in the sizes 2x2, 3x3 and 4x4. When you land 2 Ice Climber symbols (looks like the Yin & Yang symbol) at the same time you trigger the Ice Climber feature. You will see all symbols above the Ice Climber symbol turn into premium symbols and/or wilds, while the symbols below will all turn wild.

If you trigger the Ice Climber feature with a Yin/Yang symbol on the 8th row, a 9th row will be added to the reel set. This increases the number of win ways up to a staggering 531,441. The wild symbols don’t hold any value of their own, but they will step in for all regular symbols as usual.

Both regular symbols and wilds will sometimes land with a golden arrow. If arrow symbols are part of a winning combo, you trigger the Expanding Win feature. You will then see the symbol clone itself in the direction of the arrow, which means all symbols in that direction are transformed.

The main feature is the Free Spins round, and you trigger it by landing at least 3 bonus symbols in the same round.

You get 10, 15, 20 or 25 free spins when you land 3, 4, 5 or 6 bonus scatters, respectively. You start out with a 1x multiplier, and it will increase by +1 for every X bonus symbol you land. The bonus round can be retriggered in the same way you originally triggered it.

The Bonus Buy feature is brand new to the Gold series, but unfortunately it’s not available for UK players. You have several options here. You can pay 100x your stake to get 3 to 6 bonus scatters on the next spin. You can also pay 500x to get the same, but now you will start with a 10x multiplier in the bonus round.

Piling on extra rows and expanding the win ways is more fun than ever here, thanks to the Ice Climber feature and the Expanding Wins. The progressive multiplier can lead to massive bonus round payouts, but the expanded reel set will reset on non-winning spins. ELK has thus traded the “safety level” mechanism from the previous Gold titles for the progressive multiplier, something that seems more than fair enough to us.
