Kingdom of The Dead Review

The splash screen featuring a brave-looking Adventurer, a mysterious Book, and a Ra statue really says it all, or at least if you’re just a little bit familiar with the world of online slots. Kingdom of The Dead is indeed another installment in the popular ‘Book slot’ genre, and Reel Kingdom hasn’t strayed too far off the well-trodden path with this release. The best selling point compared to the original is a far superior math model, as well as the freedom of choice.

The base game is unusually dry though, even for this series, but the good news is that the bonus round triggers quite frequently (and not least with the Ante Bet turned on). You get to choose between the traditional expanding symbol feature, or a somewhat more unusual version where a new special expanding symbol is chosen per free spin. You can win up to 10,000x your stake, which is twice the “usual” potential, and overall we prefer this to the “impossible to dethrone” Book of Dead.

Kingdom of The Dead Slot Features

The premium symbols pay when you land 2 to 5 on a payline, and the latter awards between 75 and 500 x your stake. The Adventurer is the top-tier symbol, and the Book is both wild and scatter in this game. As a wild, the book steps in for pay symbols to help complete and/or improve wins, and the book can appear on all 5 reels.

Landing 3, 4, or 5 Book scatters anywhere in view awards an upfront win of 2x, 20x, or 200x your stake, and this also triggers the Bonus Round.

Kingdom of The Dead Slot Gameplay

You get to choose between 2 different bonus rounds as follows:

  • Fixed Mystery symbol - the special expanding symbol is chosen up front.
  • Random Mystery symbol - the special expanding symbol is chosen per free spin.

After any regular line wins, the chosen special expanding symbol will expand to cover all reels it appeared on, if, and only if, enough instances are in view to create a win. The special expanding symbol does not need to land on adjacent reels to create the full payline win, however, and you win +10 extra spins from landing 3+ scatters in view.

You can turn on the Ante Bet between base game spins if you wish (and the feature is available in your jurisdiction). This will cost you 50 % more per spin, and the benefit is a higher likelihood of landing scatters and thus triggering the bonus round. Non-UK players, and anyone eligible, can purchase the bonus round for 120x the stake, and neither of these options affect the RTP.

The 200 Spins Kingdom of The Dead Slot Experience

You get a brief and uneventful taste of the base game, before we trigger the bonus round with 3 book scatters at 0:38 into the 3:31-minute highlights video. We went with the 10 free spins with a randomly chosen mystery symbol per spin, and you can see for yourself how we fared by hitting the play button below.

Review Summary

It’s a bit surprising that Reel Kingdom has included the word “the” in the title, as simply ‘Kingdom of Dead’ would be more in line with the tradition of the never-ending ‘Book slot’ saga.

Everything else follows the well-known recipe pretty closely, however, and Kingdom of The Dead is a decent installment without being anything too special either. We first thought the “mystery symbols” would refer to something out of the ordinary, but the only “innovation” here is the choice of 2 bonus rounds.

The base game is as barebones and dry as Moses’ walk through the Egyptian desert, and you can expect plenty of dead spins between smaller wins here and there. The bonus round is a welcome “water hole” in that regard, and it hits every 161 spins on average (which is above average). A random expanding symbol or the regular fixed expanding symbol is the choice you need to make each time, and the above average 10,000x potential comes with a solid 1 in 4,636,069 spins hit rate. All in all, Kingdom of The Dead adds up to a solid alternative to the original Book of Dead, due to a superior math model and the freedom of choice.

Pros

  • Ante Bet increases FS hit rate
  • FS hit rate is 1 in 161 spins by default
  • Choice of random or fixed expanding symbol
  • Bonus Buy for 120x the stake (not UK)
  • Win up to 10,000x (1 in 4.6m spins hit rate)

Cons

  • Beware of customizable RTP ranges
  • Ante bet benefit not specified w/ stats
