Barbarossa DoubleMax Review

We have had a thing for Raptor DoubleMax ever since Yggdrasil first released it, but Peter & Sons’ Barbarossa DoubleMax might just take its place, or at least be its equal. It’s apparently based around a certain Hayreddin Barbarossa, who was a legendary pirate who later switched allegiances and became a highly successful admiral in the Ottoman Empire navy. This game portrays his treasure hunting glory days though, and Peter and his sons have toned down the usual oddball visuals for this release.

The presentation still sticks out from the herd of buccaneer slots in a positive way though, and the soundtrack is solid as well. Players familiar with the DoubleMax concept will know what to expect, and that is a multiplier that doubles per consecutive cascade. The cannonball visuals makes it even more engaging than usual, and the multiplier can jump higher than usual at random times. It never resets in the bonus round, for payouts up to 20,000x your stake.

Barbarossa DoubleMax Slot Features

You can turn on the Golden Bet between base game spins, and keeping it on will cost you 50 % more per spin. The benefit is that you double your bonus round chances this way, and the symbols pay between 2.5 and 10 x your stake either way.

You can land Wild symbols as well, and these step in for pay symbols to help complete and/or improve wins.

All winning symbols are removed via the Wild Cascades feature, and a Wild symbol is spawned in one of the empty positions. New and/or existing symbols will then drop down to fill the remaining positions, and this process repeats for as long as your winning streak lasts.

You can see the DoubleMax Multiplier Meter in the form of cannonballs chained together below the grid, and the cannon on the left-hand side will blast a cannonball multiplier onto any and all cascading wins. The cannonball multiplier doubles per consecutive cascade, and everything resets between base game rounds.

The Multiplier Jump feature can trigger at random times, and this increments the DoubleMax multiplier higher than the regular doubling of the win multiplier. What’s even better is that this can happen up to 3 times in a row when the feature triggers.

You trigger the Bonus Round with 7, 10, or 13 free spins when you land 3, 4, or 5 scatters in view, respectively. There is no way to retrigger the bonus round, however, nor get extra spins.

The big difference from the base game is that the doubling win multiplier only keeps building for as long as the feature lasts. The multiplier also comes with no upper limit.

On a final note, non-UK players, and anyone eligible, can take advantage of the Bonus Buy feature. You can purchase 7 free spins for 100x your stake, or a random amount of free spins for 200x your stake. The latter awards between 3 and 5 triggering scatters.

The 200 Spins Barbarossa DoubleMax Slot Experience

You get to see a few cascading doublemax sequences in the base game, before we purchase the regular 7 spins bonus round at the 1-minute mark. The feature plays out for the remainder of the 3:26-minute highlights video, and you can see for yourself how we fared by hitting the play button below.

Review Summary

This is the first time we’ve seen Peter & Sons abandon their distinct visual style, although there are traces of it to be found like hints of oak in a good bottle of rum. The presentation is excellent either way, and the cannon firing off the DoubleMax Multiplier in the form of cannonballs hitting each win is a stroke of genius. It’s a highly engaging way of introducing an already thrilling feature, and if you weren’t a fan of this system before, chances are Peter and his sons will convert you with Barbarossa DoubleMax.

They haven’t strayed too far from Yggdrasil’s original recipe, which we don’t mind at all, but they have still managed to squeeze in a new innovation for this release. The Multiplier Jump feature is a welcome addition for sure, as it can lead to sudden unexpected leaps up the multiplier ladder.

The 20,000x potential is on par with other installments in this series, and perhaps the less “eccentric” visuals will help put Peter & Sons on the map for even more players. We sure hope so, as this studio deserves all the attention and success they can get.
