Rarestone seems to be fumbling a bit in the dark when it comes to their Gold Pile series. 2 of 4 games come with a 10x higher max jackpot than the other 2, and they keep alternating between western themes and asian themes. Gold Pile: Orangutan comes with a western-style jungle theme though, but it follows pretty closely in the footsteps of the previous low-jackpot, asian-themed installment, Gold Pile: New Years Gold.

The game revolves around the Grand Jackpot Chase feature, where respins on reel 5 will either land you the smaller jackpots, or the 500x Grand Jackpot. The volatility has been lowered down to plain medium this time, and the bonus round twist is 2 extra roaming/jumping wilds. There really is no middle ground with this concept, as you either like it or you don’t.

The first thing you need to decide is how large you want the Gold Pile above reel 5 to be. The Gold Meter percentages you can choose from are 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 %, and this indicates your likelihood of landing gold symbols on reel 5.

Your stake is increased accordingly, and it costs 5x as much per spin to have 100 % gold symbols on the reel strips, compared to only 20 %. Don’t worry though, you can play with as little as 50p per spin, and still have nothing but gold symbols land on reel 5.

You need to land 5-of-a-kind wins with a gold symbol to trigger 1 of 2 features.

This is how you can win the fixed jackpots, or access the Grand Chase Jackpot feature. Here is an overview of how it works:

The 5x Mini Jackpot is awarded when you land a 5OAK win with royal symbols, including a gold symbol and a wild. The 15x Maxi Jackpot is awarded when you land a 5OAK win with premium/animal symbols, including a gold symbol and a wild.

The Grand Chase feature is triggered when you land a 5OAK win with a gold symbol on reel 5, and no wild. You can also trigger it by landing 4 diamond wilds, plus 1 golden diamond wild on reel 5.

The Grand Chase feature is where you can win the 500x Grand Jackpot . You get 3 respins, and the triggering symbol on reel 5 will be highlighted by a frame.

Only reel 5 will respin, and it will only contain golden versions of the triggering symbol, and the Grand Jackpot symbol.

This means that you will win either the Mini or Maxi jackpot on each respin, depending on the regular symbol combination that triggered the feature, or the Grand Jackpot worth 500x your stake. If you win the Grand Jackpot, the feature ends.

Gold Pile: Orangutan is similar to the 3 previous installments in the series, but it resembles the latest one, the asian-themed Gold Pile: New Years, most closely. The jackpots are significantly smaller in these 2 latest games than in the first 2 installments, although the Grand Jackpot is 500x here, instead of 400x in the Chinese new years themed slot.

It looks like Rarestone is throwing different math models and themes at the wall, to see if something sticks. We prefer higher potentials than what’s on offer here to be honest, but the straight-up medium volatility might appeal to the casual gaming crowd.

The whole series boils down to whether or not you enjoy the Grand Chase feature, with a little bonus round action on the side.
