Most Western players will probably have no idea what Kokeshi means, but it refers to traditional wooden Japanese dolls that have no arms or legs. The medium, high and super high symbols pay between 1.5 and 5 x your stake, and the cat Wild steps in for pay symbols to help complete wins. You get no wilds in the base game however, and the wild symbol holds no value of its own.

The PopWins mechanic creates and fills 2 positions per removed winning symbol, and this expands the grid with up to 6 positions per reel in the base game. Up to 7 positions per reel is possible in the bonus round.

Maxing out the grid with 6 positions per reel in the base game triggers the random Multiplier feature. The multiplier resets between spins though, also in the bonus round, and all symbols are removed and replaced when you max out the grid.

The Bonus Round triggers when you land 3, 4 or 5 scatters in the same PopWins sequence, and this gives you 5, 8 or 12 free spins, respectively. The reels come with 4 default positions during the feature, and any grid expansion is reset between free spins.

Consecutive wins doubles the x1 starting multiplier, and maxing out the grid with 7 positions per reel awards a random multiplier of x5, x10 or x20, as well as +2 extra spins.

You can gamble to get up to 12 free spins from a wheel before the bonus round starts, but you then risk losing the whole feature. Review Summary

While many asian-themed slots come across as too generic for the Western audience, KokeshiPop is refreshingly different in that regard. The eye-catching visuals are almost mesmerizing before you get used to it, and the classic oriental soundtrack is pleasant as well. The pace of the game, and of the PopWins mechanic, is satisfying as well this time, but there is still a somewhat annoying pause before the spin button becomes active again.

The overall symbol values are quite low, which is understandable when you consider the doubling multiplier action. Get a few wins in a row with the x20 starting multiplier, and it can lead to significant wins also in the base game.

Larger wins are more likely to come from the bonus round though, and it’s understandable that the doubling multiplier resets between free spins as well. On a good day up to 10,000x can be achieved, and medium volatility makes this a more forgiving installment than many of the previous PopWin releases.
