It was in mid-2019 that Thunderspin released their very first Book of ... mechanic slot called Book of Treasures. It comes with a higher RTP and max win than the game at hand, but Book of Jam sticks out from the crowd with its warm and fuzzy appeal. They’ve taken the time to animate the realistic fruit garden backdrop, and the trees are swaying gently in the wind as you play.

You get big and juicy fruit symbols within the wood-framed 5x3 reel set, and the game revolves around the bonus round with a chosen expanding symbol. What makes this installment special is the possibility of triggering a Super Bonus Pick’em Game from within the regular bonus round. This can award an extra 500x on top of whatever the expanding symbols get you, but 1,000x your stake is still the capped max win.

In a somewhat unusual twist for this genre, the Book Scatter does not serve double duty as a wild. Instead, you get a yellow star Wild that can land on the 3 middle reels only, and it steps in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning combinations.

The wild holds no value of its own, and it can appear both in the base game and during the bonus round.

The Jam Recipe Book scatter can land anywhere, and it pays 2, 20 or 200 x your stake for 3, 4 or 5 in view at the same time. This also triggers the ‘Book of’ mechanic Bonus Round, and you get 10, 15 or 20 free spins, respectively. Per usual, a regular pay symbol is randomly chosen up front, and this becomes the special expanding symbol.

The expanding symbol feature triggers whenever you land the special symbol on 3 to 5 different reels. The special symbols will expand to cover the entire reels after any regular payouts have been summed up, and they pay no matter if the reels are adjacent or not. In addition, a special Bonus Symbol can land during the feature.

The purple fruit-splatter Bonus Symbol can appear on reels 1, 3 and 5 only, and it adds +1 free spin to your tally.

It also adds +1 to the Super Bonus meter on the left-hand side. This jam jar gets filled if you land at least 5 Bonus Symbols in total, and this triggers the Pick Em Bonus Game as the free spins round ends.

You will then pick from 5 jars that appear at the bottom of a 5x5 rack, and these provide different bet multiplier prizes as follows:

• Pickles jar - guarantees a win between 10x and 15x your stake.
• Strawberry jar - awards a prize of 15x, 20x, 25x, 30x or 35x your stake.

We got the lowest-value cherry symbol as our chosen expanding symbol, but at least it gave us plenty of wins. Review Summary

There is no doubt that Book of Jam is the coziest ‘Book slot’ we’ve ever tested. We can picture grandmothers playing this as they spread homemade jam on waffles they will later serve to their grandkids. You have plenty of time to savour each win, and this is a low-tempo game with realistic and clear visuals that we think the older generations will appreciate. It’s akin to the slot version of Norwegian “slow television”, perhaps.

The younger crowd might appreciate the nostalgic value, but it will be hard to compete for their attention in this overcrowded genre with a max win of only 1,000x your stake.

The Book-style bonus round plays out as it usually does, but with the added benefit of a possible Pick’em Game trigger. This extra bonus didn’t seem too hard to trigger actually, and it provides some nice extra wins on top of what you may get in the free spins round.
