We still have nightmares from Kalamba’s last incongruent combination, Joker Leprechauns, and it’s not very often you see the Irish Luck theme combined with steampunk elements either. The reels are set inside the Leprechaun's greenhouse-like lab, and what looks like pumping mechanisms sit on top of each reel. These are effectively blocking 2 symbol positions each, foreshadowing what this game is all about.

The Ways Pays system means that you win by landing matching symbols in any position on consecutive reels, starting from the left-most reel. The highest value symbol is the 4-leaf shamrock, and it pays 5x for 5 on a payline. This is highly relevant, cause it’s the regular payouts that can land you the 6,833x max win in this game, and not the prizes you accumulate on top of the reels.

The K-Raise mechanic is at the center of things in this game, and each row is 4 positions high at the start. A pump mechanism is blocking the 2 top rows of each reel, and it will randomly move upwards to unblock more symbol positions when you land the K-Cash bottle with rainbow brew.

These K-Cash symbols also contain a random cash prize, and it’s collected at the top of each reel whenever the rainbow flask lands. The reel expansion mechanic means that you will be playing with between 1,024 and 7,776 win ways at all times, and each reel will be between 4 and 6 rows in height at all times.

The K-Cash symbol can also land without containing rainbow brew, and this is the K-Cash Reset symbol.

It still contains a cash value though, but on the following spin the reel expansion mechanic resets the reel to 4 rows in height again. You are then awarded the total cash prize that’s been building up on top of that reel.

All progress and cash prize accumulation is saved between sessions, and also between different bet levels. The Leprechaun wild can land on all the reels, and he will step in for all regular symbols, but not the bonus scatter or the K-Cash symbols.

You trigger the Bonus Round when you land at least 3 pot of gold bonus scatters anywhere in sight. Each cash meter above the reels is now reset to 2x your stake, and all reels start with 4 rows. No progress is carried over between the base game and the bonus round (or vice versa), in other words.

You start out with 3 free spins, and the K-Cash bottles will always expand the reels where they land with 1 row during the bonus round.

Each reel expansion resets the free spins tally to 3 again, and K-Cash values are collected in the meters on top of the respective reels.

The bonus round ends when you run out of free spins. If/when all reels have been expanded, this is bound to happen within the next 3 spins. All your collected K-Cash values are then summed and added to your total payout. The HyperBonus feature allows non-UK players to purchase the bonus round directly, and this increases the RTP up to 97.11 % at the most.

Review Summary

There is no doubt that Finnegan's Formula sticks out from most other Irish Luck themed titles, and the dynamic reels adds a certain sense of progress to the base game. Your biggest wins will not come from the accumulating cash prizes however, as these are mostly designed to keep you afloat in the somewhat volatile ride you’re in for in this game.

A full non-expanded screen of the highest value 4-leaf clover awards 5,120x your stake. Expand the reels fully, and payouts up to 38,880x would have been possible if the max win was not capped at 6,833x your stake.

The biggest problem is that it’s not really all that fun to feel that you’re chasing smaller wins all the time, even though solid payouts can come from the regular reel set because of the high and expanding number of win ways.
