BGaming has finally jumped on the Megaways bandwagon, and Aztec Magic Megaways is their very first release with the ultra-popular dynamic reels engine. The Mesoamerican-inspired theme is probably no coincidence, as they have several releases with similar visuals in their back catalog. We’re talking, of course, about their Aztec Magic series, and the rather simple gameplay from this range is also carried over into this Megaways debut.

The base game is pretty barebones for a Megaways release, and there is no progressive multiplier or even cascading wins. You’ll have to rely on the up to 117,649 win ways in other words, combined with occasional multiplier wilds up to x3. The wilds are sticky in the bonus round, and the x2 Chance ante bet doubles your feature chances. The bonus buy option is available in some jurisdictions, but not the UK, and overall this is a mediocre Megaways release.

The premium symbols pay between 0.8 and 10 x your stake for 6 of a kind wins, and the Aztec Pyramid Wild steps in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning combinations. The wild may be assigned with a multiplier of x2 or x3 at random times, and these combine if more than one multiplier wild is involved in the same win.

The wild cannot appear on reel 1.

The Sun Disc Scatter triggers the Bonus Round when you land at least 3 anywhere in view, and you get 8, 10, 12 or 16 free spins when you land 3, 4, 5 or 6 scatters, respectively. All wilds that land during the bonus round become sticky on the reel they land on, and they accumulate towards the top position after one spin.

The Chance x2 Feature can be switched on/off between base game spins, and it doubles your bonus round chances. You’ll have to pay 50 % extra per spin though, but it’s definitely something to consider. Alternatively, non-UK players can buy the bonus round for 100x their total stake. This awards 3+ guaranteed scatters on the spin that follows.

Review Summary

BGaming has perhaps not chosen the most original theme for their Megaways debut, but the pace of the game is excellent with the turbo switched on and if you hold down the spin button. This is also due to the fact that there is no cascading wins mechanic to slow you down, so plowing through plenty of spins to get to the bonus round doesn’t have to take all that long.

It goes even faster with the x2 Chance ante bet turned on, of course, and the sticky wilds you get can certainly do damage at certain times. This is not least the case if you get sticky multiplier wilds, and the 12,960x potential is decent enough for this engine. We also like that big wins are displayed relative to your stake, in addition to the total sum, but overall this is not a very memorable first effort with the dynamic reels engine.
