Eye of the Storm Review

Eye of Horus was a smash hit from the get-go, and it’s still going strong after more than 4 years. It’s no wonder other developers are trying to capitalize on its success, and this is the second attempt from Pragmatic Play. This time it’s their partner, Reel Kingdom, who’s behind the effort, and Eye of the Storm is sadly nothing more than a John Hunter and the Mayan Gods reskin with a slightly tweaked math model.

The big difference - drumrolls - is that the RTP has been increased from 96.51 % to 96.71 %, while the max bet has been increased from £100 per spin to £250, yet luckily they have also decided to bump up the potential, so it's now solid offering prizes of up to 10,000x of the bet. Not exactly earth-shattering stuff in other words. Moreover, while the bonus round symbol upgrade feature is still exciting, we don’t see how this effort will come close to dethroning the many different Eye of Horus versions that already exist.

The long-legged Cleopatra symbol is the wild in this game, and it expands to fully cover the reels whenever it lands. You will only benefit from the expanding wilds on the 3 middle reels however, and she will grace you with her presence in both the base game and during the bonus round.

Speaking of, the Free Spins feature is triggered when you land at least 3 pyramid scatters in sight. You will first get a scatter win of 2x, 20x, or 50x from 3, 4, or 5 scatters, respectively, and then you will be granted 12 free spins.

You start at level 1, which plays out like the base game. Land 1 wild symbol though, and you reach level 2. The lowest tier premium symbol (the fan) is then upgraded to the next tier symbol (the ankh cross) for the duration of the bonus round. You also get +1 free spin added to your tally whenever you land a Cleopatra wild.

The Symbol Upgrade feature continues progressively until you reach level 6. At the highest level, all premium symbols that land will be the highest value Eye of Horus symbol.

Here is an overview of how the feature will progress through the different upgrade tiers:

• Level 2 - All fan symbols become ankh crosses for the duration of the feature.
• Level 3 - All ankh crosses become scarab beetles for the duration of the feature.
• Level 4 - All scarab beetles become falcons for the duration of the feature.
• Level 5 - All falcons become leopards for the duration of the feature.
• Level 6 - All leopards become Eye of Horus symbols for the duration of the feature.

If you manage to land 3+ pyramid scatters on the same free spin, you retrigger the bonus round with 12 new spins. There is no upper limit here, so you can retrigger the free spins feature indefinitely.

Review Summary

It’s not all that easy to understand what Pragmatic Play partner, Reel Kingdom, has been thinking with this release. It’s more or less a reskin of Pragmatic’s own John Hunter and the Mayan Gods. The RTP of 96.71 % is slightly higher though, as well as the potential is way better. However, you can't expect to be taken seriously by savvy gamblers when making bonafide copies of your older games.

If you’re going to make another Eye of Horus clone, why not at least try to compete when it comes to the math model. Eye of Horus sports a 10,000x potential with medium volatility, and Reel Kingdom thinks a slightly higher RTP is somehow gonna dethrone that.

They would be better off making a medium volatility clone to better suit other stats, or better yet, improve upon the symbol upgrade feature somehow.
