Microgaming partner, Northern Lights Gaming, continues their Award Board series with another star collecting installment, but Magical Reels comes across as less generic due to the decently developed fantasy theme. The core concept is the same as in previous installments though, such as 5 Star Knockout, but the math model has been bumped up several notches in this release.

You can expect the bonus round to trigger from a full Star Meter quite often, but regular payouts are low due to the overall low symbol values. What you truly want is to rack up solid symbol multipliers before the feature triggers, and they come with no upper limit. The 11,750x potential is more than twice what’s on offer in previous installments, and the 96.15 % RTP is a tad higher as well.

The 4 premium potion symbols pay between 2 to 5 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and there is no wild to help you out in this game. What you get however, is a Star Meter Award Board on the left-hand side, one for each pay symbol. This Award Board plays a very central part, and you fill the respective Star Meters by landing the Book Scatter.

You can land up to 5 Book Scatters at the same time, and the Book then opens up to award up to 3 stars and +1 multiplier added to a random Award Board symbol. Whenever a Star Meter has been filled with 5 collected stars, you trigger the Bonus Round with 5 free spins.

The free spins feature comes with extra Book Scatters added to the reel strips, and the triggering Star Meter symbol is removed for the duration of the bonus round.

This makes it easier to fill new star meters, which removes another symbol as well as giving you +2 extra spins each time it happens.

Finally, any symbol with an active multiplier (which means that the multiplier value is higher than x1) will be boosted by that multiplier for each win it partakes in for the duration of the feature. The multipliers have no upper limit, and the multiplier is reset to x1 when you enter the base game if, and only if, it was used in at least one win during the bonus round.

This is done, of course, by racking up the biggest possible symbol multipliers, and filling star meters.

Getting symbols with a high multiplier eliminated is hardly an advantage though, so there is a strange ‘opposing forces’ dynamic going on in Magical Reels. Don’t expect too much most of the time from each bonus round, but 11,750x is possible when the stars align in your favor.
