Rock n Ways XtraWays Review

We’re still trying to figure out why Swintt would launch their brand new dynamic reels XtraWays™ engine with such an underwhelming debut as Lone Rider XtraWays truly is. Rock n' Ways XtraWays is similar in many ways (no pun intended), but at least the vastly improved 26,541x potential is worth a headbang or two. Everything still hangs on the dynamic paying ways and row-adding experience though, which is a tad disappointing for a follow-up release.

The rock theme is decently done, but does not come close to hardcore releases like, say, Thunderkick’s Gods of Rock. When spinning Megaways games you don’t really focus too much on the number of rows and ways each spin delivers, while this is pretty much the sole focus in Rock n' Ways XtraWays. It can be enjoyable and somewhat exciting to build up solid rows/ways, but we would like to see something more than a non-resetting paying ways bonus round next time.

Rock n' Ways XtraWays Features

The ‘sign of the horns’ Wild can land on reels 2 to 6 only, and it steps in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning combinations. The wild holds no value of its own however, but the regular symbols pay between 20 and 60 x your stake for 6 of a kind wins.

The XtraWays counter is on display above each reel, and it comes with a starting number of 3. The counter equates to the number of rows for each specific reel for the spin that follows, and special Star symbols will land to upgrade the counters with +1 to +5 per star.

Each reel counter can go as high as 8, but spins without a Star symbol reduces the counter and rows by 1 per spin (all the way down to 3 again). This dynamic reels experience comes with between 729 and 262,144 win ways.

You need 3, 4, 5 or 6 scatters in view to trigger the Bonus Round, and this awards 10, 15, 20 or 25 free spins, respectively. The XtraWays setup from the base game is carried over into the feature, and the counters never reset in the bonus round. This means that the number of rows and ways keep growing, and the XtraWays counters all reset to 3 when you return to the base game.

Review Summary

The first thing we noticed was the huge improvement in the potential compared to the first XtraWays mechanic release, Lone Rider.

1,541x seemed like a joke with all those potential win ways, but we have no complaints about the 26,541x max win on offer in Rock n' Ways XtraWays. Why you would want to kickstart a brand new Megawayish engine with such a lousy potential is beyond us, and this release is basically that the debut game should have been.

That being said, what you get is basically a slower and more awkward dynamic reels experience than what the well-oiled Megaways engine offers. The added benefit is being able to build ways progressively, and knowing up front what the spin will look like in terms of rows. Swintt has decided to hang everything on this mechanic also in this follow-up release however, and even the bonus round offers nothing extra except non-resetting XtraWays.

The bonus round comes with a 20,000x potential, and this is a very volatile effort.

Rock the Reels Megaways - revolves around a heavy metal band with animal members, and this Iron Dog release comes with 4 randomly triggered features that light up both the base game and the bonus round. The latter comes with a progressive win multiplier for payouts up to 50,000x your stake.

Lone Rider XtraWays - is the XtraWays debut release from Swintt, and it might be worth a whirl or two if you’re a huge fan of the wild west genre. It comes with the same dynamic paying ways experience as the game at hand, and the XtraWays don’t reset in the bonus round.

The 1,541x max win is significantly lower however, so we prefer the game at hand.
