Microgaming has delegated the honor of creating what might be called the ‘crowning installment’ in the BDBA series to Gameburger Studios, and Break Da Bank Again Megaways stays visually true to the dated appearance of the predecessors. The cut-scene animations are top notch though, and getting into the bonus round vault filled with gold bars and coins certainly feels like a ‘golden’ opportunity for larger payouts.

This is especially true on those rare occasions when you trigger the Hot Mode feature, as you’ll then get a head start with an x20 multiplier that only increases per Rolling Reels win. Combine that with the x5 boost you get from wild wins in all stages of the game, and the 24,185x potential might just be within reach. ‘Breaking the bank again’ is never easy, but at least significant sums are up for grabs in this installment.

The Rolling Reels feature kicks in whenever you land a winning combo, and the winning symbols are removed from the grid. New or existing symbols will then drop down to fill the gaps, and this process repeats as long as you keep winning. In the base game, the x5 multiplier wild slides in on the top horizontal reel only, and any wins involving 1 or more wilds are boosted by the x5 multiplier.

You trigger the Vault Bonus Round when you land 3 or 4 scatters anywhere in sight, and this awards 10 or 15 free spins, respectively. The bonus round comes with a non-resetting progressive win multiplier that starts at 1x, and it increases by +1 per Rolling Reels win.

You win +1, +2, +5 or +10 extra spins, respectively, when 1, 2, 3 or 4 scatters land on a free spin.

In addition, there is a Hot Mode Bonus Round that can be triggered at random times when you land 4 scatters in the base game. If you’re lucky enough to get this (or purchase it from the bonus buy menu), the progressive multiplier starts at x20. In any version of the bonus round, x5 wilds can land on all reels except the first.

The Bonus Buy feature (not available for UK players) comes with 3 options. You can pay 100x or 130x your stake for 10 or 15 free spins, respectively, or you can cough up 500x your stake for the Hot Mode version. The latter comes with 15 free spins, where the non-resetting progressive win multiplier starts at x20.

Starting with a x20 progressive multiplier is pretty wild, and we landed plenty of solid wins initially. Whether or not we managed to “break da bank” in the end, you’ll have to see for yourself!

Review Summary

Fans of the dated visual style in the previous installments will probably enjoy the visual presentation in Break Da Bank Again Megaways, but we would’ve preferred something a bit more modernized to be honest. The base game is pretty barebones, and it’s a bit of a let-down that the x5 multiplier wilds don’t even combine (not to say multiply) when more than one is part of a winning combo.

The bonus round is also standard Megaways engine stuff, except for the Hot Mode feature. Starting off with a x20 win multiplier can certainly take you for a tense ride into the innermost bank vault, but don’t expect to see it all that often unless you're willing and able to pay 500x for it. Overall, BDBA Megaways is a worthy apex installment that will please fans of the Microgaming series, but it doesn’t do all that much to win over new players.
