Northern Lights Gaming is one of the more interesting developers that publish on Microgaming's platform, and Golden Stallion is certainly a testament to that. The reels are set in the middle of a mid-west canyon, with animated horses grazing in the background above. Everything follows the Golden Spin cycle here, and not much happens between the Golden Spin except for the horses galloping to mark reel positions. Any spin in this game is part of the Golden Spin sequence. A sheriff star above the reels displays a random number of spins that tells you when the current sequence ends. Usually, this number will be somewhere between 7 and 20.

The animated horses you see in the background are not only there for show. Up to 5 of them will gallop towards you and the reel set on each spin. Each horse that stops to stamp on a reel adds a green frame to a random reel position.

The sheriff star tally counts down for each spin, and when the number goes to zero you trigger the Golden Spin. All reel positions marked by a green frame will now turn into . mystery symbols. A random matching symbol will then be selected to replace the mystery symbol.

You will either get a Golden version of a regular symbol, or a Golden wild.

A golden symbol is worth 6x as much as a regular symbol, and it will turn all other instances of that symbol into golden symbols also. If the mystery symbols turn into the Golden Wild, all symbols that are part of the winning combo will also become golden. This, of course, can lead to some pretty decent payouts.

You trigger the UltraWays™ Bonus Round when you land 3 scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5. This grants you 10 free spins, but first the Horseshoe Bonus Game will determine how many UltraWays you get during the feature. The regular symbol values are too low for bigger wins, and you will therefore constantly feel that the win you need to catch up is right around the next Golden Spin corner.

The animated horses in the background can be quite distracting, not least since they gallop straight towards you all the time. We found it hard to concentrate on the reels in this game, but then again, you only need to pay attention on the Golden Spin really.
