HungryBear are one of the newest companies on the market, and Big River Fishing is their first attempt at a fishing-themed online slot. There have been plenty of such attempts from other developers beforehand, however, and it’s clear that the currently reviewed slot shares some similarities with them. Its playing field is basic, though, consisting of just 5 reels, 3 rows and 10 paylines.

One can’t do all that much with the fishing theme, but it’s fair to say that HungryBear cared about the game’s looks and overall presentation. We especially like the transparent playing field that allows the slot’s animated background to come out and shine a little bit.

The mathematical model of Big River Fishing comes with a medium volatility level, but its actual jackpot is unknown to us. We can tell you, however, that you can play for stakes between £0.10 and £100 per spin, which should please both casual players and high rollers. The in-game paytable then claims that the top win is capped at £250,000, though whether you can actually realistically reach that or not is something that we don’t know. And the game’s theoretical RTP.

Well, it clocks in at 95.12%, which is nothing to write home about.

The pay symbols of Big River Fishing are pretty classic, as there are card ranks for low pays and more thematic symbols for high pays. For the thematic stuff, there are fish symbols, hats, and even logos, which are worth the most. The symbol payouts are pretty decent overall, but it takes some time getting to them, as the game felt pretty grindy to us during testing.

As for specials, there are Fisherman Wilds, Cash Fish symbols, and Bonus symbols. Fisherman Wilds can appear anywhere on the field and substitute for other symbols, but they can also bring you nice wins on their own, since they are as valuable as the top-paying logo pay symbols.

The main goal of the game is, as you’d probably expect, to trigger the Free Spins feature by finding 3, 4, or 5 Bonus symbols on the field. This will lead to 8, 15, or 20 free spins, respectively.

There are no retriggers available, but all fish symbols with values can now be collected via Bonus symbols, which are turned into Collector Fish symbols during free spins.

It’s a pretty simple catching formula, you see, and you can even catch the same fish symbols multiple times by landing more than just a single Collector Fish symbols. In fact, you can get up to 5 Collector Fish symbols in one spin. Note that each fish symbol is worth between 1x and 100x your bet. It’s not unlike the fan-favorite Fishin’ Frenzy, but it’s way less complex than all the fishing action you can enjoy in Big Bass Bonanza. That’s because there are no win multipliers involved here!

Review Summary

HungryBear decided to keep things basic with their first ever fishing-themed slots, and Big River Fishing really is a rather straightforward experience with its Collector Fish symbols that can collect all fish in view. Sadly, these symbols can appear only during free spins, which makes the base game a bit bland. Also, it’s hard not to be disappointed by the slot’s somewhat subpar RTP of 95.13%.
