Van Der Wilde and the Outlaws is a volatile, Xtreme Pays wild west slot from iSoftBet, and it comes with 5x3 reels and 10 paylines. All wins involving wilds trigger the Expanding Wins feature, in which the winning symbols expand to award extra payouts. A random outlaw is chosen to have similar abilities in the bonus round, and the Super Spins feature comes with 4 Expanding Wins outlaws across 4 different reel sets. Van Der Wilde and the Outlaws Review

The Wild West slots genre is filled to the brim with hard-boiled heroes and outlaws, and as the title more than indicates, Van Der Wilde and the Outlaws is all about the latter. The reels are set in a highly convincing western town, with occasional cowboy action commentary to spur you on. Being part of iSoftBet’s Xtreme Pays series, you can expect a barebones base game with plenty of dead spins.

The Expanding Wins feature keeps you somewhat afloat though, with its ‘Book-style’ expanding winning symbols mechanic. It only triggers when wilds are involved in the win though, but a random outlaw symbol gets the same attribute in the regular bonus round. This turns regular wins into potentially screen-filling payouts, and the Super version of the feature comes with an active outlaw on all 4 of the reel sets.

Van Der Wilde and the Outlaws Features

The Outlaws logo Wild serves double duty as a scatter, but as a wild it steps in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning combos. The Wild does not hold any value of its own, while the 4 outlaw premium symbols pay between 10 and 250 x your stake for 5-oak wins. Any win involving a wild triggers the Expanding Wins feature.

The Expanding Wins feature is somewhat related to the infamous ‘Book of’ mechanic, and you get the regular payout first.

After that, all the involved winning symbols expand to cover the full reels. This awards a new and possibly larger payout, and the involved wild (or wilds) is the only symbol that doesn’t expand.

You need 3 scatters anywhere in view to trigger the Free Games feature, and this awards 8 free spins for starters. The feature can be retriggered with 8 extra spins in the same manner, and which of the 5 bonus round options you get is determined randomly from a spinning wheel. Each of the 4 outlaws have their own feature, but what you really want is Super Spins.

The only difference between the regular features is which symbol becomes the Super Symbol. Mad Dog, Buffalo Butch, Bonney Cassidy or Van der Wilde can be assigned that role from the wheel.

The Super Symbol triggers the Expanding Wins feature when a win is generated from it, without the need for a wild symbol to be involved. Wild wins work the same as in the base game, and a Super Symbol 5-oak win turns into a full screen payout as follows:

  • Mad Dog - pays 10x plus 100x when you land 5-oak with Expanding Wins.
  • Buffalo Butch - pays 20x plus 200x when you land 5-oak with Expanding Wins.
  • Bonney Cassidy - pays 50x plus 500x when you land 5-oak with Expanding Wins.
  • Van der Wilde - pays 250x plus 2,500x when you land 5-oak with Expanding Wins.

The Super Spins feature awards 5 super spins, and these play out on a quadruple reel set. Each of the 4 reel sets comes with one of the 4 outlaws as the assigned Super Symbol, leading to expanding wins action like in the regular bonus round. You can retrigger the Super Spins feature by landing 3 scatters anywhere in view.

The base game gave us plenty of dead spins, but you get to see an Expanding Wins trigger before we trigger the bonus round. The latter happens around 2:22 into the 3:38-minute highlights video, and we got the Buffalo Butch feature. Hit the play button below to see for yourself how we fared.

Review Summary

There is a lot to like in Van Der Wilde and the Outlaws, at least if you're a fan of gritty high risk/reward installments in the Wild West genre. The eerie quiet dusty smalltown is flawlessly crafted, and we also like how the understated soundtrack adds to the menacing vibe. This effort might not be enough to outgun the hard-hitting alphas of the Western genre, but it’s certainly a solid release with some interesting ‘Book of’ mechanic inspired features.

The Expanding Wins feature makes the barebones base game interesting, at least on those rare occasions when you get to see it in action.

The bonus rounds come with even more expanding symbols action, which can turn a regular 5-oak win into a large to massive full screen payout. The Super Spins feature is your best bet at cracking the 8,000x potential though, due to all 4 outlaws being Super Symbols on 4 different reel sets.

Pros

  • Expanding Wins when wilds are involved
  • FS w/ outlaw super symbol expanding wins
  • Super FS w/ super symbols on all 4 reel sets
  • Win up to 8,000x your stake

Cons

  • Too volatile for casual players
