Ghost of Dead Review

Play’n Go has 8 Book of ... mechanic titles under their belt before this release, and Ghost of Dead comes with some very interesting twists to the Ancient Egypt tale. First of all, you now get a taste of the special expanding symbol tension at random times in the base game, breaking up what is usually a sinking ship grind in most cases.

Visually, the style is close to their iconic, Book of Dead, but you now get 2 bonus round versions, as well as a doubled 10,000x potential that can be cracked at any stage in the game. Not only that, but the max win chances are significantly higher than in the original, and you get to choose your preferred expanding symbol from a limited selection.

You can trigger the Ghost Spin feature at random times in the base game, and any regular pay symbol will then be chosen randomly as the special expanding symbol. If you land enough instances of the chosen symbol (2+ premium symbols or 3+ royals) on the Ghost Spin, they will expand to cover the entire reel.

The expanded symbols don’t need to land adjacent to win, and filling the screen leads to the following payouts per symbol type:

• Pharaoh Unas’ mask - pays 10,000x your stake for a full screen.
• Scarab - pays 1,600x your stake for a full screen.
• Serpent - pays 600x your stake for a full screen.
• Ankh cross - pays 600x your stake for a full screen.
• Royals - pay either 120x or 80x for a full screen.

The jackal-headed god, Canopus, serves double duty as both wild and scatter in Ghost of Dead, and as a wild it steps in for all regular pay symbols to help you form winning combinations. You win 10 free spins if 3 scatter/wilds land on the same spin, and you also get a scatter win of 2x, 20x or 200x when you land 3, 4 or 5 triggering scatters, respectively.

A selection of 3 randomly chosen pay symbols will pop up for you to choose from, and whatever you choose becomes the special expanding symbol for the duration of the bonus round. You can retrigger the feature indefinitely by landing 3+ scatters on a free spin, and the expanding symbol feature plays out similar to the Ghost Spin feature described above.

If you trigger the bonus round with ‘Spectral’ Scatters instead of regular scatters, you get an enhanced ‘Awakened’ version of the free spins feature.

You still win 10 free spins, and you pick 1 of 3 random symbols up front to become the special expanding symbol. However, the game will also randomly pick 1 extra symbol to become a second expanding symbol during the feature. The Awakened bonus round can also be retriggered indefinitely.

Review Summary

It’s hard to blame Play’n Go for wanting to cash in a bit on their massive Book of Dead success, and Ghost of Dead sticks out as one of their better efforts in that regard. Random base game Ghost Spins trigger occasional tense moments that nicely break up the grind you have to “suffer through” in the original, making it possible to crack the very solid 10,000x potential also in the base game.

Speaking of, you have a 1 in 2.3 million chance at the max win in this game, which is exceptional given that the sliced-in-half potential of BoD comes with a max win probability of only 1 in 37.5 million.

Being able to choose your own special symbol is also fun, albeit from a limited selection. The Awakened feature with 2 chosen symbols can be seen as the icing on the cake that makes Ghost of Dead a contender for the top-tiers in the ‘Book slot’ genre.
