Fans of Barcrest's never-ending Rainbow Riches saga can rejoice over yet another alternative with Midnight Magic, but it does little to lift the series to a new level. You can place bets between 10p and £400 per spin, which is solid. However, it seems a bit wasted since the potential of 625x, combined with medium volatility, is not likely to impress any high rollers.

The base game comes with a game logo wild that pays 100x for 5 on a payline (or up to 50x with the Super Dial turned on), and without the Super Dial turned on you have only the bonus round to look forward to. Audiovisually, it’s a very typical Barcrest creation, with a nostalgic appeal. The symbol upgrades during the bonus round can be quite helpful, but you don’t get them all that often in our experience.

The rather manic looking leprechaun is the scatter symbol in this game, and you need at least 3 on the same spin to trigger the bonus round. More precisely, you will get 10, 15 or 20 free spins when you land 3, 4 or 5 scatters, respectively.

The bonus round comes with a fairy scatter, and she will wave her magic wand to upgrade all premium symbols to the highest value symbol in sight. If a wild is present on the reels however, the fairy scatter will upgrade all premium symbols to wilds. This can lead to some decent payouts for sure, but there is no way to retrigger the free spins or get extra spins.

You can double your stake via the Super Dial button to activate the Super Dial Bonus feature. This will then trigger a bonus wheel every time you land only leprechaun 2 scatters anywhere in sight. The bonus wheel offers instant cash wins up to 5x, or 6, 8 or 10 free spins. Essentially, it’s a way to increase your chances for the bonus round, or give you a consolation prize, when you land 1 scatter short of triggering it the regular way.

Barcrest has not done much to stray from the regular Rainbow Riches formula here, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Rainbow Riches Midnight Magic is a bad game. It’s not one for high risk/rewards punters however, as the max win potential is only 625x your stake. This is a bit low for a medium volatility title, but at least it’s higher than what the original game offers.

The base game doesn’t really offer much except for wild symbols, and it’s probably a good idea to play with the Super Dial active. This will lead to the occasional “extra” bonus round, and some okay consultation prizes when you land only 2 scatters. Players looking for more volatile action should probably check out Barcrest’s Megaways version.
