The whole ‘trick or treat’ concept was never really a thing in Europe before commercial forces imported ‘Allhallows Eve’ from the US. Halloween is rooted in ancient Celtic traditions though, which means we kind of “re-imported” a hypercommercialized version of it. Reel Spooky King Megaways is a typical seasonal reskin job, and it comes with a pale-faced vampire version of the usually charming Reel King.

While the original Reel King Megaways has been a huge success for Inspired Gaming, this more “spooky” version will probably not have the same broad appeal. It doesn’t help that the RTP has been sliced from 96.23 % to 95.56 %, although the volatility is also a tad lower in this installment. If you’re very into this particular holiday, then maybe, but most players will probably prefer the original.

The Witch Hat Wild can appear on the top sliding reel only, and it steps in for all regular pay symbols to help you complete winning combos. The Cauldron symbol is the most valuable by far, awarding 50x your stake for 6-oak. The other symbols pay between 0.8 and 7.5x your stake for the same, in comparison.

Each win triggers the Cascade feature, which means winning symbols are removed from the grid and replaced by new/existing symbols that drop from above.

This creates a chain reaction effect, and the feature goes on as long as you keep landing new winning combinations.

You will soon notice that between zero and 6 reels appear with a yellow color in the base game, starting from the leftmost reel. These are called “Lit Reels”, and they create a ‘ding’ sound when they appear. You get +1 Lit reel per consecutive cascading win, and getting all 6 reels ‘Lit’ triggers the Reel King feature. One or two more cascades after that triggers the Super King and Spooky King version, respectively.

These 3 different Reel King versions award 1-2, 2-3 or 3 to 6 Mini Slots overlaying the reels, respectively. Each Mini Slot comes with 1 payline, and only blanks or pumpkin symbols will land.

The Mini Slots have Lit Reels too, and when all 3 reels are lit you move along the Free Spins Trail. A Mini Slot disappears if you land a losing spin, unless all 3 reels are lit.

The Reel King feature thus goes on until you run out of Mini Slots, and the goal is to achieve the Spooky King Free Spins feature. If you manage to get to the free spins part of the trail, you can choose to gamble for even more free spins. This is done via the gamble wheel, but it’s also possible to reduce the number of spins all the way to zero.

The Spooky King Bonus Round comes with a progressive win multiplier that increases by +1 per cascading win. The multiplier has no upper limit, and each cascading win turns one reel red from left to right. The Lit reels remain in place until all 6 reels are red, and this increases the number of spins by 1-3, while also adding 0, +1, +2 or +3 to the multiplier.

This happens at 1:20 into the 4:52-minute highlights video, and despite getting only 1 Mini Slot, we managed to achieve 9 free spins on the trail. This reviewer is old enough to remember when Halloween wasn’t even a thing in Europe at all, but boy did commercial interests change that in major ways in relatively recent times.

It’s the same interest that drives this seasonal clone of the original success release, and Reel Spooky King Megaways gives you the exact same features with a “spooked up” audiovisual presentation.

We’re unsure how fans will see this installment however, especially since the RTP has dropped from a decent 96.23 % to a less attractive and below-average 95.56 %. Are players really keen enough on some fake, commercialized “holiday” to overlook that. Time will tell, of course, but we much prefer the charm and stats of the original game to this “trick of a treat”.
