While many players will gobble this up like cotton candy, the cutesy cutesy factor might run too high for a certain player segment. The cartoonish, humorous antics you find in Astro Newts Megaways are fun though, and the space exploration concept is both innovative and exciting. The Tumbling Reels feature is triggered on every win, and it removes all winning symbols from the grid. The gaps are then filled with new or existing symbols dropping from above, and the process continues as long as you keep winning. The regular spaceship wild can help you in that regard, as it steps in for all pay symbols on reels 2 to 6.

You also have the green ‘W’ symbol that can land on reels 2 to 6, and this is an expanding wild that covers the whole reel.

The Mega Fission mechanic splits winning symbols in two, if, and only if, they are 2 or 3 rows in height, and this increases the number of win ways, and thus your payout. This can happen once per symbol, but there is no cap on how many symbols can be split per tumble.

The sleeping piggy on the left-hand side can award the Pig on the Moon feature at random times. This awards either 1-2 expanding wilds, or up to 4 regular wilds added randomly to the grid.

The Bonus Round comes with 5 different planetary tiers, and you trigger the feature by collecting at least 6 fuel tank symbols in a single tumble sequence. You start at the Moon level with 8 free spins, and collecting 4 new fuel tank symbols is enough to level up. This takes you to a new planet, and you also get +4 extra free spins.

Each planet comes with a unique modifier as follows:

• Moon – a progressive win multiplier increases by +1 per tumble win.
• Mars – comes with super fuel cells that are worth 2 standard fuel symbols.
• Jupiter – all reels that land 7 symbols in height get locked at that height for the duration of the feature.
• Saturn – the progressive win multiplier increases by +2 per tumble from now on.
• Uranus – initiates a pay-both-ways system. This doubles the number of potential win ways from 117649 to 235,298.

Just to be clear, the tumbling win progressive multiplier remains active throughout the feature, and the multiplier value is carried over from one level to the next. Non-UK players can purchase the bonus round for 86x the total stake, and this awards 8 free spins without any triggering spin. This also increases the RTP from the regular 95.9 %, to 96.3 %.

Review Summary

The somewhat childish, cutesy cartoon theme in Astro Newts Megaways is not gonna be everyone’s cup of tea. If you don’t mind that however, there is a pretty interesting game underneath.

We would love to see similar things done with a more “serious” space exploration theme also, as journeying from planet to planet, while piling on different modifiers, is an interesting and fun concept.

The pace is a bit slow and awkward at times, and there’s probably a reason the pig astronaut is usually asleep at the wheels. He awards decent modifiers at random times though, and if you get to Uranus you’ll benefit from a +2 incrementing win multiplier, locked maxed-out reel heights and up to 235,298 megaways. This can all lead to payouts up to 20,000x your stake, but getting stuck at the Moon or Mars happens more often than not.
