They have developed a distinct and recognizable visual style by now, and in Golden Castle they introduce players to their brand new Titanways™ mechanic. It’s somewhat similar to the Megaways engine, but the larger symbols count as 1 symbol per reel.

The 1x2 and 1x3 symbols thus count as only 1 symbol, while 2x2 and 3x3 symbols count as 2 and 3 symbols, respectively, but only 1 per reel. You win by landing 3 to 6 adjacent matching symbols starting from reel 1, and 6 diamond symbols pay 10x your stake. The math model is pretty solid, and the game comes with a haunting, atmospheric soundtrack you’ll either love or turn off after a while.

The Avalanche feature removes all winning symbols from the grid, and new winning chances drop down from above to fill the gaps. The process goes on as long as you keep winning, and larger size (2x2 and 3x3) symbols crush smaller symbols on their way down if there is a partial gap underneath.

Whenever you land the Ghost King symbol, you trigger the Wild Haunt feature. One larger symbol is selected randomly, and it’s broken down into 1x1 tiles.

The Ghost King can turn 1 or more of the 1x1 symbols into wilds also, and the Ghost King symbol joins the 1x1 tiles as a wild symbol himself either way.

If you land 3 scatters in a single Avalanche sequence, you trigger the Phantom Bonus Round. This awards 10 free spins, and you will now benefit from a progressive win multiplier. The multiplier increases with +1 per Avalanche win, and it does not reset between spins. You can retrigger the feature by landing 3 scatters on a free spin.

Non-UK players can, if your jurisdiction allows for it, buy the bonus round. This will set you back 70x your stake, and you are then guaranteed 3 scatters in the next avalanche sequence.

The RTP jumps from 96.34 % to 97.12 %, which makes it something to consider.

Review Summary

Having already experimented with the Megaways engine, Fantasma has conjured up a copycat version of their own in Golden Castle. It doesn’t feel like something that will catch on to be honest, and large symbols counting as a single symbol is not really all that exciting. The Ghost King can make a small dent once in a while, by splitting up the symbols, but the base game is hardly a thrillride.

You need the bonus round to get anywhere in other words, and it’s a very standard progressive multiplier feature. The crushing symbols might help trigger it at times, but other than that they don’t do much. The math model and the 20,000x potential is solid enough, but we had to turn off the music after a while. We don’t see Golden Castle as the ideal vehicle for introducing a brand new mechanic, and the Megaways engine is hardly shaking in its boots.
