SpinPlay has released some pretty successful titles by now, but it’s safe to say their production is somewhat varied in quality. Action Boost Amber Island was not really ‘love at first sight’ for us, and we weren’t quite convinced upon further inspection either. The visuals are not too shabby, but a tad too generic for our taste. The island complex backdrop gives you a nice view though, and you will see 3 active volcanoes above the main grid.

With lava spilling over, these volcanoes collect gemstone symbols revealed by Random Reveal mystery symbols, and this will eventually trigger the Action Boost™ Bonus Round. Each gem triggers a unique bonus round with different modifiers and features, and you can get a combination of all 3 of them on occasions. This greatly increases your chances of closing in on the 5,000x potential, and fans of this somewhat rarely seen system may enjoy this release.

The premium animal symbols pay between 2 and 5 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and the lava goddess Wild symbol can appear stacked on any reel. The Wild will not always land fully in view, however, but it will step in for pay symbols to help complete and/or improve wins.

In addition, the wild symbol pays 10x your stake for 5 of a kind.

You will land Random Reveal symbols on every spin, and all instances of this symbol reveal a randomly chosen matching pay symbol in the base game. It can also reveal a green, purple, or red gemstone symbol in the base game, and it can also reveal a Volcano symbol in the bonus round. If the latter is the case, the position will function as both a gem and the revealed symbol.

Revealed gem symbols are collected in their respective volcano meters above the grid, and each time one or more gems are collected you have a chance at triggering the Action Boost™ Free Spins round. The triggering gem, or gems, determine what Action Boost feature, or combination of features, that will be active in the bonus round.

The Green Gem trigger awards 5 free spins, and the grid expands with 1 extra row per reel. This doubles the number of paylines from 20 to 40 for the duration of the feature.

Random Reveal symbols can reveal volcano cash prizes during this feature, and all wilds that appear will nudge fully in place each time.

The Red Gem trigger gives you 10 free spins, and volcano symbols award a cash prize or a jewel symbol. You need 3 green, 4 blue, 5 purple, and 6 red jewel symbols collected to win the Mini, Minor, Major, or Mega jackpots, respectively, and they pay 10x, 50x, 500x, or 5,000x your stake, respectively.

The Purple Gem trigger awards 5 free spins, and revealed volcano symbols give you 1-2 extra free spins or a cash prize. You get a random win multiplier of x2, x3, or x5 per spin, and this multiplier will boost both line wins and cash prizes revealed by the volcano symbol. The volcano symbol can only be revealed by the random reveal symbol in all 3 features.

Review Summary

The system SpinPlay has utilized in Action Boost Amber Island is not seen all that often, but it does crop up here and there in the world of online slots. The visual presentation is decent, but not really the best we’ve seen from this developer. You get animals and the wild goddess on the grid, set against a volcanic island backdrop, and you cannot win too much in the base game. Decent top-up wins are possible though, and you get plenty of random reveal and stacked wild symbols to help you out.

Collecting gems is the name of the game, really, and it keeps the tension going as you never know when the bonus round may trigger. Getting a combination of Action Boost modifiers is always a good idea, but it can be hard to pull off many times.

Each of the 3 bonus rounds have their merit, and anything can happen when they combine forces. At least to the tune of 5,000x your stake, that is, which admittedly is a decent potential for a medium volatile installment. Overall, nothing too memorable to be seen here, and we will probably not return for more.
